Tall Tales or Tall Tails- The Jamaican Dog Sled Team

January 27, 2008 · Filed Under A Jamaican Poet Rants, Must Read Blogs, jamaica runnings

I must have been really out of it but recently it came to my attention that there is actually a Jamaican Dog Sled team. Of course my eyebrows were raised and I started to wonder if there was going to be another version of the Cool Runnings Movie… May be entitled Dog Runnings or maybe Dogs Running. It turns out there is actually a movie called “Sun Dogs

The Danny Melville Jimmy Buffet Connection

The Dog Sled team was the brain child of Jamaican business man Danny Melville and singer songwriter Jimmy Buffet . Mr Melville after observing the way many stray mongrels were treated, tried to find a useful way to rescue these poor creatures.Together Melville and Buffet launched the Jamaica Dog Sled Team. This is now a 16-dog team pulling a rubber-tired sleigh around a ruggedly beautiful farm on Jamaica’s north coast.

So the dog’s pull you through bamboo forests instead of snow at Melville’s Chukka Cove Farm in Jamaica. Your toes are warm and you have warmth in your heart knowing that these dogs were rescued from cruelty.

The Jamaican Dog Sled Team at Chukka Cove goes beyond the novelty of a tropical climate producing such a team. It also provides employment for several youth , many illiterate but when hired, but part of their employment also means attending school. Already out in the international scene Chukka Cove has sent its head musher Devon Anderson to Ontario to compete at the Haliburton Highlands Dog Sled Derby at the Delta Pinestone Resort.

Plus on Feb. 9 and 10, Anderson again will leave the sun and white sand beaches to head to Kearney, just north of Huntsville, to compete in the dog sled races which are part of Kearney’s Winterfest.
Well I am proud of this dose of Jamaican Creativity right here. First Bob Sled now Dog Sled. What next??
I am going to race off now because really I am dog tired. (Anyone want to pop that corn? )

Peace

Duane
