Poetry Contest for Women
J$40,000 Prize Money for Budding Jamaican Authors and Poets
The second National Creative Writing Competition, hosted by London based WILDE International Network is being launched to encourage new voices and writers in Jamaica . The WiSPA Creative Writing Prize is expected to be the first step in the careers of new poets and novelists in the island.
With prize money of J$20,000 for each category (poetry and short stories), the competition is open to Jamaican women, 16 years and over, who have never had a piece of work published. The initiative is part of WiSPA 2007, an annual writers retreat taking place in Negril from 12th - 26h November 2007.
Sonya Smith, the US Co-ordinator, has no doubt that this event will act as a platform for international recognition of new writers. ‘We envisage this competition will grow over time and be recognized as one of the top prize of its kind – in terms of both prestige and prize money.’
In addition to the prize money sponsored by WILDE, the winners will enjoy coaching/mentoring; UK and US publicity; published excerpts of their work and inclusion in the JustWrite anthology. Deadline for receipt of all manuscripts and poems is September 30th 2007 and winners will be announced on 24th November 2007.
