A Stroll Down Memory Lane

Is it Old Age?

So the day has finally come . I can actually sit and reminisce about the good old days. When I was a teenager back in the 80’s, the good old days referred to an era eons before. Some far away time my parents lived in and spoke about.

Haul n Pull up Selector

Now the eighties have become the good old days and the difference in todays music and slang makes that so clear to me. I sat in the office the other day listening to an old dance-hall CD. We are talking here about the likes of Supercat, Early B, Josey Wales, Brigadier Jerry and Charlie Chaplain. ( We were working at the same time ok) The days when the Dancehall artiste used to tell the disc jockey to “ Haul and Pull up”

I don’t know about anyone else but back then, (even though my parents often referred to my choice of music as garbage) I think the music then was just more fun. Maybe I am becoming my parents but I love the old stuff… Not to say that you have no good songs these days but trust me it was different.

Before Gangsta kRAP.. I mean RAP

And for rap lovers remember days of Beat Street and the sounds of Run DMC, the Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, Redhead Kingpin, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick and Dana Dane . Oh yeah KRS-ONE, Boogie Down productions. Yeah its so different now. We’re talking long before gangster rap became cool. What is gangster rap anyway? Like Ed Griffin says if you have to rap about your deeds as a gangster then you are no gangster because silence is the first law of being a gangster.

BC to AD

Veteran Story Teller Amina Blackwood -Meeks (one of her many titles but the long and short of it is that she is steeped in knowledge of Jamaican culture ) defined the term BC as meaning Before Computer and AD means After Dat. Funny but true.
I found myself recently trying to explain to a ten year old girl that there was actually a time there was no Internet and no cellular phones. After getting over her shock and disbelief, she asked me how on earth did we communicate. I had to explain that we wrote letters and went to a place called the post office. ( place I have not been in a while… a long while ) Well so much for the changes I have seen in my lifetime. Now I wonder if I have I become my parents and What will I be saying 20 years from now.
