5 Reasons Poets should blog
How I write- Duane Francis
Anything Goes
When I write, many times it’s unplanned. It is very rare I wake up and say “hmmm I need to write a poem today.” I do go out on the road however sometimes just searching for something I may not have written about before. I like to draw inspiration from people I have observed, a funny story or situation almost anything is material for my poetry.
The Write Time!
I can write any time of day but I really do prefer early morning while its still dark. But I don’t beat myself up if that doesn’t happen. I am definitely a morning person, so even though an idea may come to me during the daytime, it goes on the computer at about 4am in the morning.
My Favorite Subject - I love the Ladies
There is nothing more inspirational than a beautiful woman. I am not talking about shallow beauty queen types who only have physical beauty. Many times they have help with these gorgeous features anyway. Just ask Mary Kay or Elizabeth Arden and the rest. I like natural beauty, she may not be your classic beauty queen type but she radiates really great energy.
Versatility
As much as women and the whole art of Sweet Smooth talking are a major part of my writing, I still try to be versatile. I try to avoid being stereotyped as a Romantic poet. At the same time I have no desire to become some angry poet spitting out venomous words.
I will write social commentary, but I try not to dwell too much on the negative. I believe that this can’t be that healthy for you. Honestly, the way some poets write, I think they would run out material if everything suddenly went right with the world.
The Language of My Poetry
I prize myself on my ability to write in both Jamaican patois and Standard English. Of course it depends on the mood and the topic. Somethings just require the colourful Jamaican patois to express effectively. Yuh Si Mi!
The Poet, The Teacher, The Entertainer
I write always with performance in mind. Not just how well it will look on paper but I try to think of the person who will hear it. It’s not about just the poetry lover. I write with an element of entertainment, so the average person who would not listen to poetry would want to pay attention.
Fit to write
I do find that when I am physically fit the ideas flow easier because I am more mentally alert. Some kick boxing classes and brisk walks really help to give me that mental clarity. I have also found that time to rest has many great benefits.
Just thought I would share !
