Duane Francis Speaks

When I started Writing years a go I had no idea that this many poets were in Jamaica. As a matter of fact The Art of Performance was totally foreign to me. I remember being grilled at the Poetry Society of Jamaica’s monthly meeting . You would perform your piece and the crowd got to dissect it. The crowds were kind to me really very kind.

The Art of Performance

But as far as performance goes I always look at how great Artistes perform. I am talking from Frank Sinatra , the Rat Pack to yes, the Amazing Saul Williams and Junior Gong.
Lets face it when you can control a crowd the way these brothers can then you can really perform.
Now don’t get me wrong Jamaican Spoken Word Artistes go way beyond getting a crowd response. But you must admit that if the crowd likes you then your message will hit home faster. I have said it before and I will say it again there is nothing like being on stage. Nothing like feeling the crowds energy level rise and knowing that your message hits home.

Poetry beyond the paper

I love this stuff . Poetry has been good to me. Because of poetry i have met some of the most wonderful and talented people. Because of poetry I learnt how to design websites ( i will explain that another time) and even changed my way of thinking about life.

Poetry in School

I remember teaching English at a school in a very poor farming community in rural Jamaica. Now many of these kids could barely read even though they had been passed through the school system
as if everything was okay. So you had kids in the tenth grade coming to school everyday but you could not get them to read a book let alone write. Can I tell you that after introducing these kids to Jamaican Spoken Word many a lunch time I had to be hiding from them so i could eat my lunch in peace. Everyday someone would be hunting me down with a new poem they had written. At the risk of sounding like a mush, it still warms my heart just thinking about it.

Jamaican Spoken Word , Loud and Clear

For the uninitiated , you have not heard poetry, you have not heard the spoken word until you have heard it expressed by a Jamaican Spoken Word Artiste. NUff Love
